ST. DAVIDS, Pa.—Eastern University Women's Soccer entered the final game of the regular season on Saturday playing for a chance to keep the year alive in the postseason.
The Eagles needed to beat the Wilkes University Colonels and have FDU-Florham tie or lose at Delaware Valley, but unfortunately for the Eagles, neither result came to fruition. Eastern fell 2-1 to the Colonels on Saturday, concluding their season.
In similar fashion to Wednesday's game against Ursinus College, Eastern fell behind right around the 30-minute mark, tied the game shortly before halftime but allowed the game-winning goal with less than 20 minutes to go in the half. The Eagles looked sharp in both occasions, but were unable to come away with the win. Eagles' head coach Dan Mouw particularly noted the play of Alondra Cervantes and Stephanie Le as they worked to control the ball in the midfield.
After falling behind at the start of the 30th minute on a header goal by Wilkes, the Eagles knotted the game back at 1-1 with 4:25 remaining in the first half. The Eagles earned a corner kick from the right corner. Freshman Courtney Davis struck a low out-swung towards the top of the 18. Le collected the bouncing pass, stepped inside the 18 and drove the shot off the inside of the left post and into the back of the net. Le, a junior defensive midfielder, scored her first collegiate goal.
The 1-1 tie stood until the 76th minute when the Eagles caught an unlucky break. As the Eagles tried to clear the ball from just outside the top of the box, Wilkes forward Sarah Wasley ran through the ball on Cervante's clear attempt and the deflection bounced to a barely onside Katie Hughes who finished the game-winning goal. The Eagles only had one shot attempt the final 14 minutes and were unable to mount a comeback.
Saturday's game marked the end of the careers of senior captains Emily Roquemore and Elayna Simpson. The Eagles recognized the pair prior to the game. Simpson, who missed the majority of the season due to injury, suited up and lined up with the team as the starting goalkeeper one last time before exiting to the sidelines after the first play of the game.
The Eagles finished 2014 with a 5-14 record in a year with a difficult non-conference and conference schedule. Next year, the Eagles will look to build on the experience gained by their 16 current underclassmen.
