ST. DAVIDS, Pa.- Eastern University Women's Basketball used a
12-0 run at the start of the second half to pull away from the visiting
Lions of Penn State Brandywine (5-5) with a 73-46 win. Twelve Eastern
players scored as the Eagles built their lead to as much as 29 points in
the second half.
Junior guard Kaitlyn Dougherty led the way for the Eagles with 14
points, eight assists, and seven rebounds in 27 minutes of action.
Dougherty had helpers on five of the of the first nine baskets and made
another two as the Eagles pulled out to a 25-13 lead in the first eight
minutes of play.
The taller Eagles had their way of things inside until Meghan Nowak
picked up a second foul on the perimeter. Even with Nowak in the game,
the Eagles still found their way to the paint as Emily Lavin made 5-of-6
shots to lead all scorers with 10 points at the break.
The Eagles built their lead to 39-26 at the break. The lead could have
been larger, but 14 first-half turnovers gave the visiting Lions more
scoring chances in transition.
Nowak and Lavin asserted their presence at the the defensive end at the
start of the second half to set the tone. Lavin finished with five
blocked shots and Nowak blocked another one and forced several other
misses. Eastern held Brandywine without a point until Stacey MacArthur
hit a 3-pointer eight and a half minutes into the period.
The Eagles held the lead the rest of the way. Bethany Zimmerman finished
with ten points and a game-high nine rebounds in 22 minutes off the
bench. Lavin finished the evening with 12 points.
Eastern held a
commanding 50-33 edge on the glass and shot 55 percent from the floor.
Olivia Encarnacion had 13 points to lead the visitors.
Eastern returns to action at Keystone College on Thursday evening.
