LA PLUME, Pa.--Eastern Women's Basketball held off a late rally by the Keystone College Giants on Thursday and handed the Giants just their third loss this season.
The Eagles improved to 7-6 as they wrapped up non-conference play with the 73-64 win.
Eastern never trailed on Thursday. Gina DiDomenico started the game off right by nailing a 3-pointer 48 seconds into the game. The trey was the first of six succesful 3-pointers by DiDomenico who scored a game-high 22 points. Twenty-two points in a game is a career best for the junior guard. She nearly finished with a double-double, passing out nine assists.
Fellow guards Kaitlyn Dougherty and Kaleigh Boreman added 10 points and eight points, respectively.
Post players Emily Lavin and Meghan Nowak were a force to be reckoned with in the paint. Lavin gathered 21 rebounds, including nine offensive rebounds, and finished with 14 points and one block. Nowak finished with 16 points, eight rebounds and two blocks.
Eastern took its largest lead of the game with 12:31 left in the second half after a jump shot by Dougherty put the Eagles up 57-41. However, the Eagles lead began to slip as Keystone strung together a 16-4 run, cutting Eastern's lead to 61-57 with 6:13 left.
Coach Nate Davis called a timeout to rally the troops, and the Eagles responded by outscoring the Giants 12-7 in the game's final six minutes. With 3:44 remaining Eagles' point guard Emily McPeak hit a 3-pointer that was followed on the next possession by a 3-pointer by DiDomenico where she had to first create space with a nice crossover and step back behind the line to hit the shot. The 3-pointers on back-to-back possesions helped the Eagles pull away for good.
The Eagles open conference play on Wednesday at home against Misericordia University.
