ST. DAVIDS, Pa.-First year midfielder Gennifer Vandeventer scored
from the corner of the penalty box in the 89th minute to lift Eastern
University Women's Soccer to a 2-1 win over Farmingdale State.
The
Eagles opened the scoring in the thirteenth minute after a foul near
the edge of the box on the left side. Emily Cole curled a serve into the
back post that Stephanie Le flicked between a defender and the
Farmingdale goalkeeper. Emily Roquemore made her first touch count with a
solid finsh into the vacant net.
"We know that Rock [Roquemore]
can be dangerous on those," head coach Dan Mouw said, "but we needed to
have enough stability in the game to bring her up on some chances. Steph
made a good flick and Emily was spot on with the finish." The goal is
the fourth of her career for the junior center back.
The Rams
equalized less than four minutes later after a fast clearance on an
Eastern corner kick. The Eagles committed numbers into the box to try to
double the lead and Farmingdale was able to get out of the zone with a
quick clearance. Alena Gannon finished the transition attempt on a pass
from Melanie Zeltman.
Farmingdale had a slim 4-3 edge in shots through the opening 45 minutes and both teams had two corners.
The
Eagles had two good chances to grab the lead in the first ten minutes
of the second half. Le's header on an Elisa Direnzo corner went just
wide and Victoria Graham's shot after a beautiful through ball from Cole
slipped outside the left upright.
Shortly after Elayna Simpson
made her second save of the match for the Eagles, Cole had an
opportunity on a header in the 72nd minute slip over the crossbar.
The
game seemed destined for extra time before an offside call near
midfield gave the Eagles a chance to get numbers forward. Roquemore
served a high ball that bounced back to DiRenzo. The sophomore
midfielder tried to control the clearance attempt but the ball bounced
free. She pursued the ball and forced a short clearance from the
Farmingdale defender.
Vandeventer cut the clearance away at the
corner of the box and lifted a shot to the back post for the first goal
of her college career. The freshman from Manorville, N.Y. is the only
current player from Eastern's roster from Long Island.
"This was a
good team win," Mouw concluded. "I am so happy to see Genn take
advantage of a chance like that, and I felt like we worked together
better than we have in any game this year. We have stuff to work on, but
if we can build on the effort and commitment of today, we will continue
to make strides as we head into the Freedom Conference."
Eastern (2-5-1) plays again next Tuesday at home against Stevens Tech.
