SWARTHMORE, Pa.- Eastern Unviersity Softball managed just
10 hits over 14 innings and dropped a pair of games at Swarthmore
College. The host Garnet took the first game 6-0 and pulled away to a
10-4 lead in game two.
In the opener, Swarthmore scored four
unearned runs in the bottom of the first inning to grab control of the
game. After the seccond batter of the game reached on an error, Eastern
starter Janelle Fair got the next batter looking. The third out of the
opening inning did not, however, come until the next four batters
reached safely.
The four run cushion would prove to be more than
enough as the Eagles sent the minimum to the plate over the first three
innings and saw a bases loaded situation in the fourth end with a
swinging strikeout. Only two of Eastern's four hits in the game left the
infield, and the Eagles managed only one extra base hit on the
afternoon.
Swarthmore scored a run on three hits in the fifth and added another unearned run in the sixth for the final margin.
The
Eagles grabbed a 2-0 lead in the opening frame of the second game. Fair
picked up the only RBI of the inning with a single to left. Fair and
Kasey Williams each had two hits in the game.
The Garnet answered
with two in the bottom of the first. After the Eagles went down in order
in the second, Swarthmore scored six times in the bottom of the inning
to grab a commanding 8-2 lead.
The Eagles grabbed one back when Williams singled home Jessi Baker in the third, but the rally died with Williams on second.
The
bottom of the order generated a run after Ariel Polanco reached on a
two-base error, reached third on a single from Jess Figeroa and scored
on a single to left by Jessi Baker.
Williams took the loss in the circle in game two.
The Eagles travel to Alvernia for a non-league doubleheader tomorrow.
