READING, Pa._ Eastern University Softball ran into a hot Alvernia
University team and was unable to score a run while dropping both ends
of a road doubleheader. The Eagles managed only eight singles in falling
3-0 in the opener and 8-0 in the nightcap.
Alvernia starter Brittanie
Wolfe kept the Eastern offense off balance through game one. The Eagles
only reached second base once in the contest. Eastern starter Janelle
Fair held the vaunted Alvernia
offense in check for much of game one, but a pair of unearned runs in
the third and a single run in the third proved to be more than enough
for the win.
The Crusaders (24-4) entered the afternoon
with a team batting average of .380 which had them ranked in the top
five nationally. Fair allowed just six hits and struck out three while
allowing only one earned.
The Eagles fell behind 4-0 in the first
two innings of game two. Eastern loaded the bases with two out in the
fourth, but a fly ball to center field ended the rally. The Crusaders
ended the game early with four runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Eastern (7-19) will look to get back on the winning track with a home doubleheader against Wilkes this Saturday.
