Women's Basketball Puts Mounties On Ice

ORLANDO--Eastern Women's Basketball improved to 5-5 with a 68-42 win over the Mt. Aloysius College Mounties on Saturday afternoon.

The Eagles led the Mounties by five going into halftime but sprinted away in the second half. The Eagles went on a 24-10 run through the first 10 minutes of the second half and outscored the Mounties 37-16 in the second half.

Eastern shot just 33.3 percent in the first half, but shot a remarkable 51.5 percent in the second period. Eagles' head coach Nate Davis said that it took the Eagles some time to get comfortable and relaxed offensively. "I think we were pressing and trying to a little too much instead of letting the offense come to us," Davis said. "That was the key for us in the second half--to play the way we're capable of doing and and to trust each other and let the offense happen naturally."

Kaitlyn Dougherty helped the Eagles' second-half charge with 12 points on 6-of-10 shooting. Dougherty finished with 18 points, six rebounds and four assists. Eastern forward Meghan Nowak posted another double-double, scoring 21 points while snagging 12 rebounds. Guard Gina DiDomenico added 14 points, five rebounds and three steals. Freshman center Emily Lavin nearly pulled off the double-double, scoring eight points and grabbing nine rebounds.

"When you have people that are consistent, you dictate what the defense does based on the threat of those players," Davis said. "I thought Kaitlyn Dougherty had a great tournament overall, and Meghan Nowak too. Making the all-tournament team is a big accomplishment for her. Gina DiDomenico played great today too and Emily Lavin is continuing to get better every game."

The Eagles defense stifled the Mounties, holding them to 24.6 percent shooting from the floor. Eastern also only gave Mt. Aloysius seven free throw attempts for the entire game.

Coach Davis said that overall this trip to Orlando, Fla. has been a good trip for the team. "I think it's been a big team-bonding trip for us," he said. "It was nice to leave with a win and to have the chance to play against the No. 2 team in the country (Hope College on Friday night). That experience is going to help us out down the road. Now we'll take a little break and turn our attention toward Neumann."

The Eagles return to action at Neumann University on Jan. 4.
