MONTCLAIR, N.J.--The No. 9 Montclair St. Red Hawks proved to be too much for Eastern Women's Soccer on Wednesday night. Eastern dropped the road game 4-0.
Eastern head coach Dan Mouw said that the undefeated Red Hawks were as good as their No. 9 record suggested, and maybe even a little better. "They're good," he said. They have loads of pace all over the field; we gave up three breakaway goals where they put balls over the top and were able to get to them first."
Breakaways present obvious difficulty for any keeper. Coach Mouw made sure to compliment goalie Elayna Simpson's play. Simpson recorded nine saves. This is the sixth time this season that Simpson has made nine or more saves in a game. She has stopped 95 shots through 11 games this season.
The Eagles fell behind 1-0 in the 12th minute and trailed 2-0 at the end of the 15th minute after Simpson made an initial save, but Montclair finished the rebound. With the early 2-0 lead, the Red Hawks were able to lock down defensively, holding the Eagles to zero shots throughout the game. The Red Hawks have not allowed any goals from the field this season. Their one blemish came from a converted penalty kick.
Montclair scored again in the 35th minute and the 84th minute.
Mouw said that in the beginning of the second half, the Eagles were able to make some constructive changes that will help them moving forward.
The Eagles will look for a conference win when they host DeSales University for Homecoming at noon Saturday.
