PURCHASE, N.Y.--Eastern Women's Soccer made sure it got every minute possible out of its trip to Manhattanville University as the Eagles battled the Valiants through regulation and two overtime periods to a 1-1 draw.
Eastern sits at an even 1-1-1 in the Freedom Conference after Tuesday night's tie.
Freshman defender Lydia Peachey scored the equalizer for the Eagles in the 86th minute, notching her first collegiate goal.
The Eagles fell behind in the 18th minute, but they created several opportunities to tie the game. Eastern worked Manhattanville's keeper Dolores Diemicke, putting 12 shots on goal. Head coach Dan Mouw that there were a couple chances the Eagles had that don't show up in the box score--a few dangerous crosses in front of the net that the Eagles weren't able to put on goal.
One of the Eagles' closest chances to even the game came in the start of the 72nd minute when Emily Roquemore headed a ball off the inside of the post and somehow stayed out of the goal.
With less than five minutes remaining in the game and the Eagles still trailing 1-0, freshman Lydia Peachey came up the field and took a one-touch shot from about 25 yards out. Her strike carried over the keeper's head and glanced off the bottom of the crossbar and into the goal. "I think Lydia might have surprised herself with that shot," head coach Dan Mouw said. "It is great to see her step forward and have the confidence to take and make a shot in a big spot."
Peachey came up big in crunch time of the Eagles' previous game as well, making a team save on the goal line in the 85th minute of Saturday's 1-0 win over DeSales University.
In Tuesday night's game, neither team could get a shot past the keeper in the extra twenty minutes of play. Eagles' goalie Elayna Simpson made three of her five saves in overtime. Simpson's final save came at the start of the 110th and final minute as Manhattanville earned its first corner kick of the match and followed it with a shot on goal.Eastern earned 10 corner kicks throughout the game compared to Manhattanville's one.
The Eagles continue conference play on Saturday at noon against Misericordia University, whom they challenged in last season's conference championship.
