After falling behind 6-2 at PSU_Brandywine, Eastern
University Women's Basketball grabbed control of the game with a
decisive 24-2 run over the next ten minutes. The Eagles, who started
that run with 19 straight points, eventually earned a 68-41 win in their
final non-league game of the 2012-13 campaign.
Meghan Nowak
scored all 16 of her points in the first half to lead the way for the
Eagles. The sophomore forward, who has 757 career points at the midway
point of the year, nearly had a double-double at half. She grabbed two
second-half rebounds to finish with 11.
The host Lions made
their first three shots of the game before going cold for the next eight
minutes. The Eagles, meanwhile, established an inside scoring presence
with Nowak, Reilly Gavitt and Tori Grossi scoring 21 of the team's first
23 points of the game. With the smaller Brandywine defense collapsing
on Eastern's inside players, The Eagles connected on three 3-pointers in
the next six minutes to build their lead to 23 with 2:38 on the clock.
Kaleigh Boreman, Kaitlyn Dougherty, and Nowak each connected from
distance in that stretch.
The Lions scored the final four points
of the half to close the gap to 40-21. The hosts continued that momentum
with a 7-2 out of the break to close the gap to 42-28 before Dougherty
sparked a 12-1 run with a short floater in the lane. Gina DiDominico
made a pair of long-range shots in the run. DiDomenico is now shooting
46 percent from behind the arc for the year. Since starting the year
5-for-22, the sophomore guard has made at least one long-range shot in
each game and has made over 54 percent. Her only miss from distance
today came on an off-balance effort to beat the shot-clock.
With
only 10 free throws, the Eagles scored a season-best 29 field goals.
Gavitt made 6-of-10 for 14 points, and Dougherty converted on 5-of-6
shots to finish with 11 points. Grossi secured a game-high 13 rebounds
to go with eight points. The Lions were led by Brandy Flowers with 10
points.
The Eagles (6-7, 2-0 Freedom) travel north for an
important game at Misericordia on Wednesday. The Cougars won the Freedom
Conference last winter and are tied atop the standings with Eastern and
FDU-Florham at 2-0 in league play.
