ST. DAVIDS, Pa.- Eastern University Women's Basketball fell
67-53 to King's College in a rematch of last year's Freedom Conference
Semifinal. Though the Eagles closed the gap to one early in the second
half, King's never trailed in the contest.
King's guard Celia
Rader hit a deep 3-pointer as the shot-clock was sounding on the first
possession of the game to put the visitors up. Neither team had great
cohesion on offense early, but the Eagles were in the deeper funk. Eight
minutes into the game, the Monarchs held a 17-4 lead.
The Eagles
rallied with a 10-0 run over the next three minutes, but the offense
again went cold. King's held a 33-25 lead at intermission. Lindsay
Atchison scored 10 first-half points to pace the guests. Kelsie Patton
led the Eagles with eight at the break. Though its defensive effort held
King's to 36 percent shooting, Eastern could only match that 36
percent shooting and had eleven turnovers.
Eastern showed signs of
life at the beginning of the second half as Kaitlyn Dougherty made
consecutive jumpers and Meghan Nowak made a 3-pointer and a pair of free
throws to close the gap to 35-34, but Kaitlin Michaels scored on a
drive and Atchison split a pair of free throws to spark an 8-0 King's
run. Michaels and Atchison scored 30 of the Monarchs' final 32 points to
seal the win.
Meghan Nowak again led the Eagles with 17 points
and 12 rebounds. Patton finished with 12 points and a team-best three
assists. Michaels hit 12-of-18 foul shots and finished with a game-high
24. Atchison added 23.
The Eagles will travel to FDU-Florham to take on the first place Devils this coming Wednesday.
