Doutrich Scores Three in Women's Soccer Win

ST. DAVIDS, Pa.- As storm clouds rolled toward St. Davids, Eastern University Women's Soccer netted two first half goals and picked up a third less than five minutes into the second half to earn a 3-0 non-league win over Centenary College. Senior midfielder Kelsey Doutrich scored all three goals, and Elayna Simpson recorded a shutout in her first collegiate start.

The visiting Cyclones had their possession in the early part  of the match, but the Eastern defense did well to keep the game in front of them, and as time passed the the Eagles began to gain both possession and field position. Kelsey Spoelstra had a good chance saved by Centenary's Megan Williams in the twelfth minute.

Moments later, Doutrich picked up a a ball in the middle of the field and slotted a pass toward Amy Thomas on the left wing. Thomas earned the end-line and crossed a ball back into Doutrich's path for a 1-0 advantage. Doutrich doubled the lead under darkning skies in the 36th minute. Christine Colman picked out Doutrich on a quick throw in from near the end line, and Doutrich dribbled central and lifted a left-footed shot into the upper left corner of the net.

"Christine did exactly the right thing there," Head Coach Dan Mouw commented, "We spent time in practice working on throwing the ball in productively, and she had good awareness to get the ball in to Kelsey before they were set."

Doutrich completed the hat trick mid-way through the 50th minute on another good pass from Thomas on the left flank.

Simpson's best save of the match came on a free-kick from 20 yards out. She finished with five saves.

"Elayna has been great all year," Mouw stated, "She has worked really hard to be ready, and we needed her today to be solid and she was exactly what we needed. We know that we have two outstanding goalkeepers."

"I thought we had really good focus through the match," he continued, "and all of our players went in and were aware of what their responsibilities were defensively and how we wanted to approach their dangerous players."

The Eagles (4-4-1) start Freedom Conference play at DeSales on Saturday.
