Field Hockey Takes Freedom Opener

EDWARDSVILLE, Pa.- Eastern University Field Hockey jumped out to a 4-0 lead and held on for a 5-3 final to top the Wilkes University Colonels in the Freedom Confernece opener for both teams. Kelby Bolton scored a pair of goals and Brittany Moyer had a goal and an assist to lead the Eagles (5-2, 1-0 Freedom) to their fifth straight win.

Bolton put the Eagles on the board in the sixth minute on a penalty corner goal from Moyer. It was the first of two occasions when the two seniors would combine on a goal. head coach Camrin Azzarano commented on the leadership of her two seniors.

"They continue to set a great example in work ethic and production on the field," she said, "we asked the team to come out and play clean and sharp from the opening whistle and they set the standard on that"

Megan Bolton scored the second of the day on another penalty corner chance. Moyer provided the insert and the younger Bolton sister powered a shot that deflected off a Wilkes' stick inot the goal. Moyer then picked up a goal in the run of play in the 12th minute. After weaving through a group of defenders, she earned the circle and pounded a shot to the back post for a 3-0 lead at half.

Eastern had a 9-3 advantage in shots and a 7-2 edge in penalty corners at the half.

Abby Wagner put in her second of the year on a redirect of a shot by Shannon Graybill. The Colonels finally broke into the scoring column on a nice cross and finish play in the 51st minute.

Any hope and momentum that the home squad picked up with the goal was quickly crushed as the Eagles converted yet another Kelby Bolton penalty corner goal. Wilkes scored a goal in the 59th minute and another after time expired on a penalty corner play for the final margin.

The Eagles continue their five-game road swing with midweek games at Swarthmore on Tuesday and Rowan on Thursday.
