ST. DAVIDS, Pa.-Eastern University Women's Lacrosse broke a
10-10 six minutes into the second half and pulled away to a 17-14 home
win over the King's College Monarchs (7-5, 2-1 Freedom) to remain
unbeaten in Freedom Conference play. Courtney Reinhold had five goals
and an assist and Allie Fultz scored four times and added a pair of
assists to pace Eastern (5-7, 3-0 Freedom).
Because of injuries,
the Monarchs played the game down a player, and the visitors tried to
control the pace of the game early with long possessions. Their strategy
worked in the early going as they grabbed a 2-1 lead with slightly over
17 minutes to play. Jocelyn Paul jumped high to catch a Fultz pass and
slammed home her first of two on the day to tie the contest at 2-2 at
the midway point of the opening period.
The Monarchs scored nearly
immediately out of their time out to grab a 3-2 lead. Eastern answered
with three goals following three straight draw controls. The Eagles
dominated nearly all the stats of the game except the draws. Led by
Emily Foley's ten controls, the Monarchs won 21-of-31. Allie Gauthier
scored twice and Reinhold had a single tally in the three goal spurt
that took 90 seconds.
The Monarchs refused to go away. Chelsea
Manes scored on a free position shot and then set up Krystina Villarreal
to tie the score at 5-5. King's converted 5-of-6 free position shots.
Eastern, on the other hand, was only 1-of-7 on the free shots. The
Eagles took the lead on shot from Reinhold that deflected off a Monarch
stick, and they pushed their lead to 9-7 on an Allie Gauthier free
position shot.
Moments later, it appeared that the home side had
earned a three-goal edge as Gauthier finished another free position
shot, but an official waved off the goal for a foul away from the ball.
Amanda Harney scored in transition off the violation with only 22
seconds to play. The Monarchs' leading scorer finished with three goals.
The Eagles won the draw and the two teams went to intermission as
Shannon Wilcox fired a perfect pass to Kendall Rood on the doorstep.
King's
scored the first two goals of the second half, but the Eagles began to
exploit their advantage in the midfield in the middle part of the second
half. The Eagles pushed the lead to three for the first time on a Fultz
shot after an aggressive dodge from behind the goal with 14 minutes to
play.
The two teams traded goals twice and the Eagles held
possession to close the game. The Eastern coaches felt that their team
did well in transition and were pleased with the team's composure in the
midfield game.
Kristy Getsay made seven saves to pick up the
win in goal. Eastern honored seniors Fultz, Reinhold, Getsay, and Kelly
Dando before the game. The Eagles now prepare for a match-up at Freedom
Conference favorite FDU-Florham on Wednesday night.
