GETTYSBURG, Pa.- For the second Wednesday in a row, Eastern
University Men's Lacrosse was on the road facing a team ranked No. 17
in the nation. This week, the Eagles bid to earn an upset win fell short
at Gettysburg. The host Bullets scored three straight goals to close
the first period and held on for a 10-6 win.
The Bullets scored
twice to open the game, but the Eagles rallied to tie the contest on
goals from Matt Soldano and Chris Farrar. Farrar's goal, with five
minutes to play in the opening period came courtesy of a Matt Wagner
pass.
After Gettysburg (8-3) retook the lead with 2:39 to play in the
period, Will Johnson scored his first of two on the day to tie the
contest at 3-3 with 1:43 on the clock. The Bullets, however, grabbed the
lead off the ensuing face-off.
Though the Eagles won 10-of-19
face-offs on the day, the Bullets took the best advantage of their wins
with several goals immediately off the draw.
The Bullets scored
first in the second period, but the Eagles answered with a Matt Wagner
goal on a Soldano pass with 11:55 to play in the half. The Bullets then
struck back immediately as Robby Maddux scored his second of six on the
afternoon only five seconds later.
"We got hurt in transition
today," Head Coach Kevin Wallace stated, "they made good use of their
face off wins, and they broke down our clears for a couple goals as
well."
The Bullets scored twice more in the second period to pull away to an 8-4 halftime lead.
In
the second half, the hosts worked to hold the ball and the lead.
Gettysburg scored the only goal of the third period. Farrar and Will
Johnson scored goals in the first half of the fourth period to cut the
deficit to three goals, but Maddux scored his final goal of the
afternoon six seconds after Johnson's tally to put the game away.
"We get better every time we play these types of games." Wallace stated, "We will be ready for conference play coming up."
The Eagles (6-4) open Freedom Conference Play with a home game against DeSales on Saturday.
