ST. DAVIDS, Pa.--Eastern University Softball won game one of Monday's doubleheader against King's College on a walk-off fielder's choice, but were unable to find any walk-off magic in game two.
The Eagles took game one 6-5 with a bases-loaded run scored by Jaclyn Gangemi, but left a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the seventh of game two, falling 7-5 to the Monarchs.
In game one, Eastern pitcher Janelle Fair improved her season record to 7-2, striking out seven batters over seven innings pitched.
The Eagles only picked up six hits in game, but managed to score six runs with some help from four errors by the King's College defense. Five of those runs were scored in the first inning.
Leading 5-4, the Eagles had a chance to end the game in the top of the seventh, but Amanda Cardone slapped a two-out home run over the fence, her second of the game, to tie the score. The first three batters in the bottom of the seventh reached safely for the Eagles, Gangemi with a walk, and Fair and Maggie McGowan with singles. With no one out, Jaime Schwartz poked a ball to short. The Monarchs' shortstop Jenn Harnischfeger threw off target to home and Gangemi crossed the plate for the winning run.
Eastern again took an early lead in game two, leading 5-1 after three innings. However, the Monarchs batted around in the fourth inning off pitcher McGowan, scoring six runs. Monarchs' Brittny Baynes blasted a two-run home run, and Tina Seber made matters worse with a three-run bomb to center field. Trailing 7-5, the Eagles were unable to rally over their next four chances to bat. The Eagles batted 1-for-12 to end the game.
The Eagles play at Philadelphia Biblical University at 3:00 pm on Wednesday.
