Softball Splits with Wilkes in Freedom Opener

WILKES-BARRE- Eastern University Softball (8-3-1, 1-1 Freedom) used a seven run fourth to erase an early 1-0 lead en route to a 10-4 win at Wilkes University in the Freedom Conference opener for both teams. In game two, he host Colonels (4-4, 1-1) scored three times in the bottom of the sixth to earn the split by a 4-1 final score.

Janelle Fair improved to 6-0 on the season with a complete game effort in the first game. Fair allowed 10 hits and three earned runs, but the junior right-hander limited the damage by staying in the strike zone after the Eagles took the lead. She issued just one walk on the day.

Wilkes scored a single run on three hits in the bottom of the third. The Eagles answered seven runs on only three hits in the top of the fourth. Maggie Mcgowan led off the inning with a walk and ended the inning with a two-out two RBI double.

Wilkes came back with two runs in the bottom of the inning, but Fair and the Eastern defense held the Colonels at bay for the rest of the game. Jaime Schwartz drove in a pair with a single in the seventh to finish the scoring.

Wilkes grabbed the lead in the second game with a two-out home run, but again the Eagles answered back in the top of the fourth. Emily Houk scored from first on a single and an error. The Eastern bats managed only a single hit in the seventh the rest of the way, and the Colonels finally got to Eastern starter Maggie McGowan with three runs on four hits in the sixth. McGowan (2-3) only walked a single batter in six innings of work.

The Eagles are at Franklin and Marshall College on Tuesday.
