ST. DAVIDS, Pa.--Eastern Field Hockey took a 1-0 lead at the end of the first half, but The College of New Jersey responded with two second half goals to prevent the upset.
The Eagles fell to 8-5 this season with Tuesday's 2-1 home loss to the No. 6 TCNJ Lions, who improved to 11-1.
Eastern freshman Megan Bolton scored the Eagles' goal at the very end of the first half. Eastern earned a penalty corner with less than five seconds on the clock, but because the half cannot finish until the end of a corner, Megan Bolton had enough time to receive the insert from Brittany Moyer and blast a shot across the circle to the far right post. Bolton's goal was her fourth this season. "We were really excited when Megan scored," head coach Camrin Azzarano said. "That was clutch."
Bolton's goal was one of Eastern's three shots on goal in the first half and one of Eastern's four corners. However, in the second half, the Eagles put one shot on goal and earned no corners. TCNJ's penalty corners elevated from one in the first half to five in the second half. "We're not getting shots and not getting corners," Azzarano said. "Their defense was strong in the circle, so we needed to try to get corners. That's what they were able to do to us at the end."
The TCNJ Lions tied the game in the 49th minute on Sarah Cummings' first goal of the season and took the lead in the 60th minute with Jillian Nealon tipping in her 17th goal of the season.
The Eagles play their second of three home games this week on Thursday against No. 11 Haverford at 4 p.m. The Haverford Fords are the Eagles' seventh nationally-ranked opponent this season.
