ST. DAVIDS, Pa.- It was not the start they hoped for, but Eastern University pulled itself together and in time to score five first-half goals on the way to a 5-3 win over No. 14 Haverford College. Brittany Moyer scored twice and added a pair of assists to pace the Eastern attack in The Eagles' second win over a nationally ranked opponent in the past week.
The visiting Fords put the Eagles under pressure immediately with a penalty corner only 30 seconds into the match. Catherine Aronowitz played an insert to the top of the circle where Mary Hobbs drew the attention of the Eastern fliers. Hobbs then pushed a pass to her right for Jen DiMaria who pounded home her fourth of the year to give the guests the early advantage.
Given the tight-scoring games the Eagles have played in of late, the early goal loomed large. The Haverford lead, however, was short-lived as the Eagles picked up the first of their nine first-half penalty corners in the fifth minute. Moyer inserted the ball to Megan Bolton. Her shot caught a flier's stick on the way to the goal and bounced to Shannon Graybill. Graybill's first shot was saved at the goal, but the rebound only went as far as Abby Wagner. Wagner played a cross into the goalie's pads and Graybill pounced on the rebound for her second goal of the season.
Haverford again grabbed the lead in the ninth minute on a nifty bit of stick work on the end-line Bryn Bissey.
The game then began to turn as the Eastern forwards earned a series of penalty corners. Megan Bolton connected for her first of the day on the sixth of those corners. Her low shot from the right side blistered across the crease and went off the goalie's stick into the top part of the cage with just over 17 minutes to play.
Moments later, Moyer gave the Eagles the lead for good with a clever reverse stick shot off a rebound chance. Megan Bolton buried her second of the day in the 23rd minute on another penalty corner to give the Eagles a 4-2 lead. The 16 penalty corners for the match is the second highest total posted by the Eagles the year.Â
Moyer's final tally came with less than five minutes to play in the period. The senior forward collected a pass in the top of the midfield and earned the circle with a powerful dribble. It appeared that the ball was going into the Haverford goalies pads, but at the last second, Moyer jabbed at the ball and chipped it over the goalie for her eighth of the year.Â
Hobbs scored for Haverford on a nice combination play to cut the gap to 5-3 with 23 minutes to play. The Eastern defense kept the Fords pinned in their own end for most of the last 20 minutes. Eastern enjoyed a 25-9 advantage in shots and a decisive 16-5 edge in penalty corners.
The win is the third of the year against a ranked team. Coach Azzarano was especially pleased with the way her team recovered from a heart-breaking 2-1 loss to the defending National Champions on Tuesday. The TCNJ game, Azzarano noted yesterday, taught them a lot and will prepare them for the rest of the year. The rest of the year, it turns out, got off to a good start today.
With her six point day, Moyer moves into a tie for fifth on the single-season assist board for the Eagles. She is two assists shy of the single season mark of 16 held by two players and last reached in 2006 by Genna Brandt. Her 35 career helpers put her in a tie for fourth with Christy Miller. Â
The Eagles (9-5) are now done with the non-league portion of their schedule and will now turn their attention to defending their Freedom Conference Championship. Eastern has won Freedom Championships in each of its four years in the conference. The Eagles host Misericordia in an 11 am game on Saturday.
