ST. DAVIDS, Pa.- The game started slowly and gathered
momentum, but in the end, neither Eastern University Women's Soccer nor
the visiting Wilkes University Colonels were able to find a game-winner
in a 0-0 Fredom Conference draw before a homecoming crowd at Eastern.
Eastern's Alysia Goodman and the Colonels' Kate Mahoney finished the day
with five saves.
Both teams kept things conservative through the
opening moments of the game. While both sides were able to make forays
into dangerous areas, neither team was able to release a shot until late
in the 42nd minute of action. Eastern center back Katelyn Rittenhouse
was able to get better on a restart chance, but the senior's header from
10 yards out bounced just wide of the frame.
Another Wilkes
foul created the final, and perhaps best chances of the half with less
than a minute to play. Goodman came forward for the free kick. She drove
a ball to the top corner that Mahoney was able to touch around the
post. The Eagles had several chances on the ensuing corner kick, but
time expired before the Eagles could knock anything toward goal.
The
game opened up after the intermission and the Colonels found several
chances. Goodman was equal to the task as she made three of her five
saves in the opening ten minutes of the second half. The best of those
coming on a volley from close range that she tipped into the cross bar.
Michelle
Brown came on as a substitute near the hour mark, and nearly
immediately after entering the junior midfielder put two shots on frame
that tested Mahoney. Both teams had five shots at the end of regulation.
The overtimes had a flurry of chances. Eastern had two shots and
two corners in the first overtime, but neither shot was able to find
the mark and the Colonels defended both corners well.
For a
moment, it appeared that Emily Roquemore had scored the game-winner in
the 105th minute, but the goal was disallowed for contact with the
goalie. Neither team was able to get a shot on for the remainder of the
match.
"This was a tough one," said Head Coach Dan Mouw, "There
were a lot of things to be encouraged about, but it puts us in a tough
spot in the league. I thought Alysia showed her quality today. I don't
know if there is a goalkeeper in the country who can influence games the
way she can. Neil [Assistant Coach Hobbins] has done great things with
both her and Elayna since joining the staff this year.
The tie
drops the Eagles (7-5-2, 2-1-1) into third place in the Freedom
Conference with three league games to play. Wilkes will take on
Misericordia on Tuesday afternoon.
The Eagles are back in action Monday with another home test against Montclair State.
