ST. DAVIDS, Pa.- Prior to this afternoon's home contest against
Stevens Tech, the Eastern University women's soccer team had seen each
of their first two games go down to the wire, so it was no surprise when
this afternoon's contest against a tough Stevens squad went to extra
time. The visiting Ducks (1-2) found the only goal of the game 2:15 into
the first overtime to earn the win.
The Eagles (1-1-1) had the
better of play through the opening 100 minutes of action, but the Ducks,
in front of senior goalkeeper Kaitlin McClymont, dodged several bullets
to keep the clean sheet. McClymont turned away ten Eastern shots and
had help from her back line on another two as the Eagles held a 23-9
edge in shots through the first overtime.
The home squad earned
seven of its 11 corners in the second half, and only a pair of brilliant
reaction saves kept the Eagles from taking the lead. Kelsey Doutrich
and Kristine Zeiset snapped headers on consecutive corners that each
looked bound for goal, but the senior keeper was up to the task.
At
the other Alysia Goodman was less busy, but no less spectacular. The
Eastern goalkeeper finished with six saves, including a stunning
reaction save in the 83rd minute.
Jessie Wos finished the game
with a hard strike from 11 yards out, but Ann Heine made the goal happen
with a strong central run off the right flank. She pulled the Eastern
defense to her and played a ball central that Kathleen Schuckers
redirected to an open Wos on the back post. Goodman got a hand on the
ball, but the shot from close range had too much pace.
Eastern
Head Coach Dan Mouw felt his team made great strides from the weekend,
but he was disappointed in the result against last year's Empire 8
Champions.
"We had moments in this game where we were really
good," he said, "and it was just glimpses, it was twenty minute
stretches where we were moving the ball, creating chances, and defending
aggressively. Our next step has to be converting those chances. I
thought our back line showed very well today, and Bethany [Engle] and Z
[Kristine Zeiset] were dominating against equal numbers in the middle of
the field."
The Eagles will look to rebound at Stevenson
University on Saturday. The Mustangs qualified for the NCAA Tournament
in 2010 as the Capital Conference Champions.
