OWINGS MILLS, Md.- Eastern University Women's Soccer dropped a tough
1-0 decision at Stevenson University Saturday afternoon. The host
Mustangs (2-1-1) scored the only goal of the match in the 87th minute to
secure the win. The Eagles (1-2-1) had chances to take the lead early
but were unable to find the net for the second straight contest.
The
first half saw each team have a couple good chances. Alysia Goodman
made a big sliding save in the thirteenth minute to keep the sheet
clean, and the Eagles defended a corner shortly thereafter. Amy Thomas
had the best chance of the period for either team, but her 20-yard blast
hit the inside of the right upright.
Tess Beckwith created
several dangerous chances in transition in the second half, but the
Mustang defense and goalkeeper Brittany Ross recovered to turn those
chances away.
Stevenson's goal came in transition late on an early
ball crossed in from the left side from Mackenzie Calhoun. Jamie
Matlock met the ball ten yards out on the back post and after a short
touch hammered home her second goal of the year.
Head coach Dan Mouw was frustrated with the result but hopeful that the day provided a growing chance for his team.
"We've
been here before," he said. "It's not fun to be in a scoring drought,
but I think we will break out of it soon. We were short-handed today,
and several players stepped up with contributions in longer minutes. I
believe that will benefit us in the long run."
The Eagles have only minimal time to recover before they host local rival Cabrini College on Tuesday afternoon.
