ST. DAVIDS, Pa.- Eastern University Women's Soccer scored
twice in the first half and added an insurance tally early in the second
to earn a convincing 3-0 home win over Moravian College. Junior forward
Kelsey Doutrich paced the Eastern attack with a goal and a pair of
assists.
The Eagles (4-4-2) earned the bulk of possession early,
but the Greyhounds (3-5-1) fought off three early corners and dodged a
couple bullets on close range misses in the first 26 minutes. Doutrich
set up the games first tally with a strong run through the midfield. She
forced the defense to commit and pushed a nice pass to Ashley Graybill
on her right. Graybill left no doubt with a solid strike just inside the
far post for her first tally of the year.
Michelle Brown nearly
doubled the lead after splitting a pair of defenders and earning the box
seven minutes later. Moravian keeper Genevieve Chaleff deflected her
low shot around the post for a corne. The Eagles finished the contest
with a 9-2 edge in corners.
That pressure resulted in a another
chance with just over five minutes to play in the opening frame. Amy
Thomas negotiated a path through a pair of defenders and found Doutrich
alone in central space. Doutrich lifted the ball just enough to get it
past Chaleef for her 25th career tally.
Head Coach Dan Mouw believes Doutrich has provided a lift since her return from injury last week.
"Kelsey
understands how to score," Mouw said, "and she makes others better with
her play-making. We are still trying to get a whole line-up together,
but I think as our attacking players get more time together that we will
see more and more success around the goal."
The Eagles held an 8-0 edge in shots at the half.
The
Eastern pressure seemed to pick up another notch after the break.
Chaleef turned away chances from Emily Roquemore and Tess Beckwith and
came off her line to stuff another pair of breakaway chances. Graybill
then hit the woodwork on a free kick from the edge of the box.
The
home side picked up the important insurance goal on a close range shot
from Charlotte Laurie in the 66th minute. Doutrich created the third
goal as well. She beat the Greyhound defense up the end line on the left
side and snapped a cross from close range that was aimed for Alli Inch.
Chaleef got her hands to the cross to keep it from Inch, but the ball
squirted just far enough away for Laurie to bang home her third of the
year.
Alysia Goodman managed her box, but did not need to make a save in securing the shutout.
Mouw
was pleased with his team's paly in transition and their ability to
adjust to some line up changes made necessary by injuries. He identified
the play of Carly Inch, in her first game as a center back, as an
important development.
"When we learned just before the game that
McKenzi [Herbster] couldn't go, we had to make a decision," he said,
"We knew we could slide Katie Ruth inside and she would be fine, but we
felt that would take away too much going forward. Carly is really
versatile, and she stepped right in and was super-solid."
The
Eagles begin Freedom Conference competition at King's College Saturday
afternoon and will host top-ranked Messiah College next Wednesday.
