WILKES-BARRE, Pa.-- Eastern University Women's Soccer
scored in the seventh minute and never looked back en route to a 6-0 win
over the King's College Monarchs in the Freedom Conference opener for
both teams. Charlotte Laurie scored twice and Ashley Graybill recorded a
goal and an assist to lead the Eastern attack.
The Eagles
(5-3-2, 1-0 Freedom) took control of possession early and earned a pair
of corner kicks in the opening five minutes of action. Tess Beckwith
nearly opened the scoring off a brilliant through ball from Alli Inch,
but King's keeper Laren Duguid came off her line and blocked the ball
wide. The reprieve was but temporary for the home side, as the Eagles
recovered possession almost instantly, and less than 20 seconds later
Beckwith was receiving a pass from Kelsey Doutrich on the right wing.
Beckwith's cross landed right at Laurie's feet, and the senior striker
made sure with a solid touch to the middle of the open net.
Beckwith
scored her third of the year in the 19th minute on a scramble in front
of the goal. Alysia Goodman struck a long free kick into the box that a
Monarch defender headed back into the playing area. Bethany Engle kept
the ball alive with a volley toward Laurie in front of the net, but her
shot was blocked before it left her foot. Laurie scrambled to win the
ball back as a pair of King's defenders stepped to clear the ball.
Beckwith's strength prevailed and she was able to tackle the ball into
the goal for a 2-0 edge.
Despite playing into a steady breeze, the Eagles held a 9-0 edge in shots and a 4-0 edge in corners at the intermission.
Laurie
picked up her second of the day on a fundamental finish of a great
cross from Katie Ruth. Ruth earned the edge up the right side and
slipped a pass to the edge of the six yard box.
Head Coach Dan Mouw was very pleased with the execution out of the intermission.
"Any
time you take a 2-0 lead into the half, "he said, "you have to be
concerned about complacency in the second half. We had some very
specific things we wanted to work on in the second half, and Katie
played exactly the right ball. It was great to see her finish the play
so well, and Charlotte left no doubt."
Kelsey Doutrich made it 4-0
in the 57th minute after Ashley Graybill earned the box on the right
side again. Doutrich had her first two attempts at goal blocked, but she
pounded the third swing past a defender and the goalie for her fourth
of the year.
Graybill scored her second of the year directly off a corner kick.
"We
want her to serve the ball tight to the goal on that play," Mouw said, "
and there was enough traffic in front and bend on the ball for it to go
in untouched. We really hoped that today would be the day that we
scored on a corner. We have been hitting quality serves all year."
The
corners paid off again in the 81st minute as Amy Thomas converted
another Graybill serve with a solid header for the final result.
King's (2-7, 0-1) did not record a shot on goal in the contest.
Goodman and the Eastern defense have allowed only one goal in the last 380 minutes of action.
