Women's Soccer Draws at LVC

ANNVILLE, Pa.-Kristine Zeiset scored her first goal of the year in the 87th minute to help Eastern University Women's Soccer secure a 1-1 draw on a muddy pitch at Lebanon Valley College. It is the fourth overtime game of the season for the Eagles, who have just one result, a 3-1 win over Cabrini with more than a one goal margin either way.

After a scoreless opening period, the host Dutchmen (5-2-1) found the net on a quick counter up the left side in the 52nd minute. After a turnover in the midfield, Sara Drabenstadt curled an early serve in behind the Eastern back line that Nicole Snyder reached just before Eastern goalkeeper Alysia Goodman arrived. Snyder's touch was true as the ball rolled just inside the right upright.

As LVC had much of the pressure in the moments after the score, the goal looked like it might be enough to give LVC a third straight win over the Eagles. As the game progressed, however, the Eagles (3-3-2) began to gain momentum and apply pressure on the LVC net. With just under 18 minutes to play, the Eastern staff elected to push an extra body forward, and first year defender Emily Roquemore was influential in the midfield as the Eagles played more directly into a trio of forwards.

"The unsteady footing in the midfield had caused problems throughout the game," Head Coach Dan Mouw said, "and we felt like we needed to go to the 'May Day' plan a little earlier than we would like to. Our forwards turned up the pressure, and we were able to play the last 15 minutes more in their end."

The action was not all in the Eagles end, and Goodman had to be aggressive in the back half of the field to keep the ball moving forward. She would finish the afternoon with seven saves and countless more good plays off her line.

A period of sustained pressure resulted in Tess Beckwith serving a ball across the face from a deep position that LVC cleared to the edge of the 18. The defender was prepared to clear the ball upfield, but a hustling Beckwith slid through a puddle to poke the ball out of bounds and keep the play in the LVC end. On the next play, after a LVC clearing attempt went out of bounds, Cara Dembrosky threw the ball in to Carly Inch and got it back on the sideline. She pounded a high bending ball into the area that the LVC keeper got hands to but did not hold.

Zeiset, who had started her run 35 yards from goal, got to the ball before it bounced a second time and slotted home a right-footed shot.

Mouw was pleased to see his senior captain make the big play.

"To be honest," he said, "it was not a great day for us. We are not really accustomed to wet grass, and a lot of stuff got hung up. Kristine earned that goal with great effort. We needed that play."

Both teams had chances in the overtime, but neither team was able to break the draw. Snyder's attempt in the 100th minute hit the top of the crossbar. Kelsey Doutrich's shot from a tight angle on the left in the 107th minute slid just wide of the far post. Goodman made her final stop of the day with a nice tip over the bar on a Heather Tran shot in the 109th minute.

The Eagles return to action with a non-league home game against Moravian on Wednesday before beginning Freedom Conference play at King's next Saturday.
