ST. DAVIDS, Pa.- Both teams needed a sweep to keep Freedom Conference Playoff hopes alive. Neither the visiting Delaware Valley College Aggies nor the host Eastern University Eagles were  able to get the sweep as the two split a softball doubleheader. Eastern hit four home runs in an 8-4 win in the opener but could not get any offense going at all in a 9-0 loss in the nightcap.
Junior shortstop Maggie McGowan put the Eagles (16-13, 3-8 Freedom) up with a leadoff homer in the bottom of the second. The blast to right was the ninth of the year and 16th of her career. Both are Eastern University records.
The Aggies rallied with a pair of runs in the top of the third. Jackie Wear hit an RBI triple to cap the Delaware Valley rally. That lead, however, was short-lived, as Janelle Fair launched her first of two three-run homers in the bottom of the inning.
Del Val again cut into the Eastern lead with a single run in the fifth, before Fair struck again to give the hosts a 7-3 edge. Her shot to left center was the 11th extra base hit of the year. Michelle Morongell capped the Eastern scoring with a solo shot in the sixth. Fair picked up her eighth win of the year.
The Eastern bats went quiet in the second game, and myriad miscues gave the visitors too many opportunities. The Aggies scored three in the second on only two hits. The Aggies then capitalized on three errors and indecision in the field to score four in the fourth.
Loran Mihaliak earned the shutout win for the Aggies (10-18, 3-8 Freedom). The Eagles return to action with a single game at King's on Monday.
