The Eagles scored three runs in the sixth and a single tally in the
eighth to earn the 5-4 win over the defending Freedom champions.
Things
did not start well for Coach Stroop's squad. The Monarchs plated single
tallies in the second and third, and the Eastern bats did not produce a
base-runner until Tori Jacobson reached on an error to start the fifth
inning. That miscue gave the Eagles the slightest window, and they
capitalized on a two-out single by Jaimie Schwartz to halve the Monarch
lead.
Eastern starter Janelle Fair, meanwhile, settled in to a
good rhythm and retired the hosts in order in the bottom half of the
inning. Jaclyn Gangemi started the Eastern rally in the sixth with a
single to right-center. After Fair doubled, Maggie McGowan singled
through the left side to tie the game. The RBI is the 31st of the year
for the junior shortstop, which brings her within two of the Eastern
single-season mark.
Michelle Morongell then delivered the big blow
of the inning with a two-run double to put the Eagles up 4-2. That
lead, however, was short-lived as the hosts rallied for a pair in the
bottom of the inning. After neither team scratched in the seventh, the
game, which was rescheduled no fewer than four times, went to extra
innings.
After Megan Polulak lined out, Fair singled to start the
Eastern rally, McGowan lined a sharp single to move her pitcher along,
and the Eastern staff elected to put Jessie Baker in to pinch run. Baker
scored on a Jacobson single to right.
Fair, who leads the Eastern
hitters with a .421 average, picked up her ninth win of the year with
the complete game effort. She is one win from the Eastern single-season
mark.
The Eagles are back in action tomorrow with a non-league doubleheader at Muhlenberg College.
