READING, Pa.- Eastern University Softball settled for a split in a nonleague doubleheader at Alvernia University. Janelle Fair scattered seven hits and Maggie McGowan blasted her eighth home run of the year as the Eagles earned an 8-0 shutout in the opener. The Eagles gave up six runs in the fourth en route to a 7-0 loss in the nightcap.
McGowan, who equaled the Eastern career mark and set a new single-season standard with the shot to center, capped the three run first with the two-run homer. Her 29 RBIs puts her ina tie for second on the Eastern single season list.
The Eagles increased the lead to 4-0 in the third on a Tori Jacobson single. Fair allowed several runners to reach, but limited the damage as she did not walk a hitter through her six innings. The Crusaders (16-6) did not have a leadoff batter reach in any inning in the first game.
The Eagles extended the lead further with a pair of runs on a Jacobson double in the fifth and another two on a Michelle Morongell single in the sixth.
Game two looked like it was going ot be a nail-biter until the Crusaders capitalized for six runs on four hits and three errors in the fourth inning. The Eastern offense went quiet in the second game as Fair was the only Eagle who seemed to solve Alvernia starter Michelle Jenson.Â
The Eagles (15-12) return to action at home tomorrow with a Freedom Conference doubleheader against Delaware Valley College.
