WILKES BARRE, Pa.- The plan seemed like a good one. Eastern
University Softball left early in the morning for a 10:00 am start to
get in a pair of games with Freedom rival King's before the weather
turned ugly. The rains came sooner than expected and washed out game
two, but the trip had a positive result in game one as the Eagles
rallied from a late deficit to earn a 5-1 win in game one.
Janelle
Fair allowed only four hits and struck out ten while going the distance
for the win. The host Monarchs grabbed a one-run lead on a pair of
singles in the fifth.
The Eagles responded quickly with a single
run in the top of the sixth. Jaclyn Gangemi led off the inning with a
double, and Fair helped her own cause with double down the left field
line to tie the game.
Fair walked the lead-off hitter for the
hosts in the sixth, but she picked up a key strike out after a
successful sacrifice and stranded the go-ahead run at second. Eastern
(14-11, 2-7 Freedom).
The Eagles picked up four runs on five hits
in the seventh inning for the difference in the game. Sam Terenzoni hit a
two-out double to knock in the first run. Gangemi singled to center to
score Terenzoni. Fair hit a single to put two on base for Maggie
McGowan.
The junior shortstop hit her first triple of the year to
drive in a pair. McGowan moves into third place on Eastern's
single-season RBI list with her 28th of the year.
Fair faced
four batters in the ninth to finish the contest. Game two made it
through most of the first innning but the expected heavy rains will
force the two teams to meet again. As evidence of how challenging the
weather has been this spring, the Eagles are now 1-0 on Saturdays.
