ST. DAVIDS, Pa.--Eastern University Field Hockey advanced to the Freedom Conference Championships with a 2-1 win over King's College.
Brittany Moyer scored her 11th and 12th goals of the season in the win, receiving assists from Yvonne Herbster both times.
In the 44th minute, Moyer earned her first goal after receiving a cross from Herbster in front of the net. Herbster said she knew she had to get the ball as close to the cage as she could and looked for the shot or the pass. When she saw Brittany, she said she knew that Brittany would finish it.
Moyer scored the second goal twenty minutes later after Herbster worked through the defense and crossed the ball to her.
While King's earned more penalty corners and took more shots, Eastern made the most of the opportunities it received.
Eagles' goalie Sara Blaylock notched seven saves in the victory. "[Blaylock's] a great communicator," Senior Dani Danser said. "She's doing a phenomenal job--just taking it one day at a time and improving every single day."
Dani Danser also backed up her goalkeeper on the field. Danser made a crucial defensive save with five minutes left in the game. Had that shot gone in, combined with the goal King's tallied with 30 seconds left, the Eagles would have had to settle the game in overtime.
Danser and Herbster are ready for their fourth straight Freedom Conference Championship. They described the playoff atmosphere as an additional challenge to deal with, but felt confident that their experience would assist them.
"We know what comes up after this game," Herbster said. "If we win, we move on to the NCAA [tournament]. We've gone there the past three years, so we want to keep the ball rolling."
The Eagles challenge FDU-Florham for the conference championship Saturday. The Eagles look to avenge a 1-2 OT loss in October to the Devils.
