MADISON, N.J.--Thirty-five seconds of overtime was all they needed.
Eastern University Field Hockey rallied to win its fourth straight Freedom Conference Championship Saturday, defeating the FDU-Florham Devils 3-2 in overtime.
Senior Yvonne Herbster netted the game-winner 35 seconds into overtime. Herbster self-started a ball from out of bounds, took the ball into the circle and flicked an arcing shot from 10 yards out. The ball sailed over the goalkeeper and dipped into the cage to end the game and clinch the championship for the Eagles.
Yvonne Herbster, in her fourth championship game, earned Freedom Conference MVP honors.
The Devils scored first, netting a goal in the seventh minute. Eastern responded in the ninth minute with a goal by Jess Jaindl, set up by a reverse sweep shot by Kelby Bolton.
FDU-Florham went up 2-1 with a goal in the 23rd minute. Herbster responded by taking a long run and blasting a shot off an FDU-Florham defender and into the goal in the 29th minute. Neither team was able to score for the rest of regulation.
Coach Camrin Azzarano commented how the Devils' jammed the middle and made it difficult to move the ball.
The Eagles faced a challenge in the 62nd minute when Kelby Bolton received a yellow card, leaving the Eagles a player-down for five minutes. Coach Azzarano said that when that happened, the rest of the team stepped up and limited the Devils' chances.
The Eagles also overcame not having three of their regulars. Azzarano said that the rest of the team stepped up and did not waver.
At certain points in the Eagles' season, the thought of winning a conference championship may have seemed unlikely. Coach Azzarano said she had a recent meeting with some of the leaders on her team where they openly talked about doubts about the team. "We talked about turning those thoughts off and thinking about what we needed to do to win," she said. "We believed and got it done."
Eastern carries its 12-8 record into the NCAA tournament Wednesday against a to-be-determined opponent.
