WILMINGTON, Ohio- Eastern University
Women's Basketball improved to 2-0 on the young season with a 62-58 win
over Kenyon College at the Wilmington College Invitational. Shante Jones returned to the line-up for a return to her home state and led the Eagles with 23 points.
Eastern
struggled from the field and the foul line through the opening frame.
The Eagles shot only 9-23 from the field and trailed 27-22 at
intermission. Kenyon did not shoot significantly better from the field,
but the Ladies used a 20-15 rebounding edge to secure eight extra
shooting attempts.
Jones scored 15 second-half points and first-year forward Meghan Nowak
added 13 of her 17 after the break as the Eagles outscored Kenyon 40-31
in the second frame. The Eagles made 16-19 free throws in the second
half to secure the win.
Bekah Roland scored 10 points and gathered five boards for the Eagles.
Head Coach Nate Davis was pleased with his team's grit in their first road trip of the year.
"It
was an ugly, hard-fought road win," he commented, "We showed a lot of
composure and never gave up. We have a lot of room to get better, but it
was great to see Meghan [Nowak] step up and to have Shante back in the line-up. We need to get ready to take on a tough Wilmington team on their home floor tomorrow."
Eastern will play the host Quakers for the tournament championship tomorrow at 3:00 pm.
