ST. DAVIDS, Pa.--Eastern University Field Hockey bounced back Saturday to win its homecoming match against King's College.
The Eagles scored twice in the half to beat the Monarchs 2-1.
Both of the Eagles' scores came off penalty corners, something the Eagles have been working on improving all season. "Give Coach Kara the credit," head coach Camrin Azzarrano said. "She really worked with the players [on scoring on corners] over the past couple days. She's been tough on them, and what she's trained them to do is why we scored those goals."
Jess Jaindl knocked home both of the Eagles' goals. She scored her first in the 54th minute. Sarah Webb inserted the ball on the penalty corner and the Eagles worked the ball to the right post. After Brittany Moyer attempted a score, Jaindl pushed the ball past the keeper for the score.
Jaindl scored her second goal, the game-winner, just three minutes later. Carly Friedman inserted the corner to Kelby Bolton. Bolton took a slap shot that ricocheted off King's goalie. Jaindl raised her stick and knocked the airborne deflection into the goal.
According to Azzarrano, the Eagles have been working on getting the ball to Jaindl. "Again, give Coach Kara credit, because she laid into the team and said get the ball to Jess," she said. "That's what Jess did for us last year and we were struggling to get it to her."
The Eagles held the Monarchs for the final 13 minutes, finishing out a two-week stretch of six total games. The Eagles finished the three-game-a-week stretch 3-3 and improved to 6-6 on the season.
The Monarchs scored first when reigning Freedom Conference player of the year Jenera Quinones blasted a goal in the 51st minute past Eagles' goalie Sara Blaylock. Blaylock earned her first start in goal and saved six shots on goal. "Blaylock, in the goal cage did what we wanted her to do--provide a spark, have a loud voice, and make key saves," Azzarrano said.
Danielle Danser supported Blaylock in front of the net, making a crucial defensive save in the first half.
The Eagles host Lebanon Valley on Wednesday.
