ST. DAVIDS, Pa.--Eastern University Field Hockey finished conference play with a 6-1 win over Delaware Valley College.
Senior Yvonne Herbster recorded her 41st career assist to break the school record, passing Amber Shellenberger's 2003 record.
Herbster found Brittany Moyer in front of the goal cage with 50 seconds on the clock to score the Eagles' final goal.
"It was good for our primary scorers to connect," Coach Camrin Azzarano said. "It was a fun goal. Yvonne realizes that it's now or never."
The goal capped off an afternoon filled with scoring. Abby Wagner tallied her team-high 10th goal to start the Eagles' scoring 18th minute.
Jess Jaindl notched her seventh goal of the season on an assist by Brittany Moyer just three minutes before halftime.
With the score 2-0 at halftime, the Eagles were just beginning to pour on the goals.
Freshman Katie Lipsit scored for the second straight game off an assist by Lindsey Corbitt. Lipsit, normally a defender, has come through for the Eagles with some time at forward the past two games. Azzarano called Lipsit an "unexpected spark" for the offense.
Delaware Valley earned a goal back in the 59th minute and called timeout to plan a comeback in the 63rd minute. The timeout however backfired as the Eagles scored ten seconds later. Yvonne Herbster scored her seventh of the season, assisted by Abby Wagner. Less than thirty seconds after that, the Eagles turned around and scored again with Kelby Bolton assisting Brittany Moyer. Moyer scored her second goal and fifth point of the game in the 69th minute off Herbster's record-setting assist.
While the offense proved dominant today, Coach Azzarano credited the play of the defense for setting up the attack. "Alyssa Baughman played on both sides of the defense and she was incredibly aggressive," she said. "She allowed us to push our forwards up."
With conference play behind them the Eagles (9-8, Freedom 5-1) look forward to the playoffs. The somewhat-roller-coaster-like season has forced the Eagles to face adversity. Azzarano thinks that that will help them come playoffs. "I hope that the experiences in this season will give us insight in the playoffs," she said. "We know we're not invincible and this year we're really learning how to accomplish execution as a team on the field."
The Eagles play their final regular season game at Neumann University on Thursday at 6 pm.
