ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa.-- The road woes continued tonight for Eastern University Women's Basketball as the team dropped a 65-58 result to Elizabethtown College. The Eagles, who at 10-7 have already surpassed last season's win total by three, dropped to 2-6 away from the comfortable surroundings of St. Davids.
Things started well for the visiting Eagles as they jumped to a 10-3 lead behind six quick points from Bekah Roland, but cold shooting and defensive lapses allowed the hosts to carve out a 30-6 run over the next 13 minutes of game action. The Blue Jays held a 40-24 lead at the break behind 12 points from Kaity Snyder. Shante Jones led the Eagles with eleven points before the intermission.
The Blue Jays led by 18 early in the second half before the Eagles began to rally. Jones led a furious rally to pull the Eagles to within three points with three minutes to play.
"Shante played really hard tonight," said Head Coach Nate Davis of his junior stand-out, "it seemed that she grabbed every defensive rebound we got and her four second half steals gave us a chance." Jones scored 24 points after the intermission and finished with a career high 35 points on 13-24 shooting.
Jones has now scored 30 or more points in four games. She has scored 20 or more 12 times and leads the Freedom Conference with 22.5 points per game. She also leads the league with just over four steals a game.
The Blue Jays (10-7) hit an open three out of a timeout and pushed the lead back to eight on an inside basket. Jones had a little more left with two straight driving lay-ups to cut the deficit to four. Katie Lincoln stole a ball in the press and had a good look at a three pointer with 22 seconds left, but her shot from the top of the key rimmed out and the Blue Jays hit a pair of free throws to grow the lead back to six.
Jones grabbed a game-high 12 boards and collected five steals. Lincoln was the only other Eagle in double figures with ten. Snyder led three Blue Jays in double figures with 19 points.
The Eagles will look to get back in the win column at DeSales on Saturday.
