Two days after a strong season opener on the road, Eastern University Field Hockey (1-1) dropped a 2-1 heart-breaker to Franklin & Marshall College (1-0) in a double overtime marathon. Though the Eagles held a 17-6 advantage in corners over the 94 minute match, they were only able to convert on a single attempt.
Brittany Moyer gave the Eagles a lead on a neat finish in the 11th minute. The goal came after a cross into the front of the cage that popped in the air off the goalie's pads. Moyer redirected the thigh-high ball into the top third of the cage. Though the home squad controlled much of the early action, the visiting Diplomats equalized just nine minutes later when Eileen O'Reilly split a pair of Eastern defenders for a transition goal.
The two teams each generated chances through a scoreless second half and an opening overtime, but every time a team was able to get past the opposing goalie, it seemed there was an defender on the goal line to sweep a ball away. Danielle Danser turned away four shots in heroic style.
Franklin & Marshall goalie Sarah Dileo stopped nine shots for the game and made some critical plays off her line in the overtime. The game ended, ironically, on an Eastern corner. With both teams playing with just seven players, offensive corners are precious commodities in overtime. The Eagles earned the corner and looked to have a good look at goal, but a Diplomat stick pushed the ball behind the Eastern attackers. A big pass out sprung the guests for a three on one breakaway. Allison McLaren gathered the ball on the right side and after pulling the ball away from the pads of a charging Laura Ressler flicked the ball just out of Danser's reach into the goal.
"We did not move the ball as well as we want to," Head Coach Camrin Azzarano commented, "and that really tired us out. We had our chances to win the game, but we need to capitalize."
The Eagles will have the holiday weekend off before returning to action at home against Neumann University on Tuesday.
