Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field Hockey Tops Widener

For the third straight game, Eastern University Field Hockey handed a visiting team its first loss of the year. Today, the 14th ranked Eagles beat Widener 5-2 in a non-league game. Kim Campbell and Christin Haas scored single goals and Jess Jaindl added a hat trick in her first career start.

The Eagles (5-1) had more of the ball from the beginning. They jumped to a 1-0 lead less than 90 seconds into the contest as Campbell redirected a Kelby Bolton blast past the Widener defense on a penalty corner. Bolton also set up the second Eastern goal on a penalty corner as well. The sophomore midfielder lifted a high shot from inches inside the circle that the Widener goalie was able to keep out of the goal with a pad save with her outstretched arm. The rebound, however, did not get far as Haas collected the rebound on the doorstep and drove home the goal.

The Pride cut the lead in half on an attractive  transition goal in the fifteenth minute. Samantha Balonis earned the circle with a powerful dribble and slipped a pass to her right that Brittany Creighton slammed into the backboard.

The Eagles, who held an 8-3 advantage in shots through the first period, came out of a Coach Azzarano time out with renewed commitment to defending. Eastern pushed their edge back to two as they converted another penalty corner. In the 24th minute, Yvonne Herbster blasted a shot from the top of the circle that Jaindl redirected.

Eastern led 3-1 at half and had a 7-1 edge in penalty corners at the half. Out of the intermission, the Eagles continued to control the play. That control resulted in Jaindl's second tally of the day in the 39th minute. Jaindl finished a Campbell cross for her second of the day.

The Pride cut the deficit to 4-2 with a 51st minute goal before Jaindl completed her scoring for the day with a solid finish of an Abby Wagner cross. The Eagles finished the afternoon with a 12-5 advantage in shots.

Eastern returns to action at Swarthmore College on Saturday at noon.
