Despite missing three key players, the Eagles (6-1) scored a goal in each period to secure the victory.
Lisa Gocht, who started in place of Kim Campbell on the wing, scored her first goal of the season in the sixth minute of a tip from Brittany Moyer. Moyer, according to Head Coach Camrin Azzarano, provided a spark in each half even though her minutes were very limited due to injury. Eastern finished the opening period with a 7-3 edge in shots and a 6-2 edge in penalty corners, but they were unable to stretch the lead in the opening 35 minutes of action. Laura Ressler made two of her three saves in the opening period.
The Eagles were more dominant in the second period, but the host Garnet worked well together to thwart the Eastern attack early. Abby Wagner finally added the critical insurance goal in the 44th minute on a beautiful individual effort. The first year forward drove into the circle on the right side and, after beating a pair of defenders, fired a low shot from just inside the circle.Â
Up 2-0, the Eagles continued to control play to the final whistle. They finished regulation with a 15-4 edge in shots. The shutout is Ressler's fourth in the last five games.
"I was pleased with a lot of things today," Azzarano noted, "Swarthmore always plays us tough, and we needed to work hard to create opportunities. We need to continue to work on some defending issues-- Laura had to do more than we wanted her to do, -- but this is a good win for us. This was a tough stretch of games, and it is difficult to win three times in a week."
The Eagles return to action on Wednsday evening at Alvernia University. Based on their win over #12 TCNJ and their unbeaten mark since, it is very likely that Eastern will move up in the NFHCA/ Kookaburra National Poll prior to that contest.
