The Eastern University softball had a quick turn around, traveling to Widener for a non-conference double header Wednesday night. One day after two difficult conference losses at Delaware Valley, the Eagles looked to get back on the winning track. Unfortunately for Eastern, the Widener offense was running on all cylinders as the home team picked up two wins: 5-3 and 9-3.
Widener came out swinging in the first game, plating five runs in the home half of the first inning. The Eagles were able to chip away at the lead scoring a run in the top of the second. Junior Valerie Heffline scorched a hard ground ball past the diving third baseman for the RBI single.
Eastern picked up two more runs in the top half of the sixth when Samantha Terenzoni ripped a single to right center. Scoring on the hit were Maggie McGowan and Jaclyn Gangemi, making the score 5-3. The Eagles were unable to tack on any more runs despite two hard hit balls in the top of the seventh.
Janelle Fair took the hard luck loss in the first game. The freshman from Manheim Central High School allowed only five runs in the first inning, and then settled down to strike out five while walking none.
The Widener Pride came out swinging once again in game two, scoring all nine of their runs in the first three innings. The Eagles picked up three runs throughout the course of the game, but it wasn't enough.
Leadoff hitter, Theresa Esposito paced the offense in game two, going 2 for 4 with two runs scored. Also collecting hits in the second game were Louise Fox, Michele Morongell, Amy Bellows, McGowan and Gangemi.
"Widener is definitely the best non-conference team we have played so far this season," said head coach Brittany Stroop following the game. "They came out swinging and put us back on our heals a little bit. I can't emphasize enough though, how proud I am of our team for sticking with it and chipping away at their lead in each game."
"We have two days of practice to regroup before we resume our conference schedule on Saturday," added Stroop. "We will continue to work on our situational hitting and hopefully the hard work that these ladies put in will start to pay off for us on the score board."
Eastern travels to DeSales University on Saturday, April 10 for a 1:00 PM double header.
