The Eagles scored first in both affairs. In the first game, Eastern posted one run in the top of the third inning on a Maggie McGowan sacrifice fly. The Bulldogs, however, rallied for five runs in the bottom of the frame.
Eastern refused to go quietly. Samantha Terenzoni and Theresa Esposito singled to start the rally. McGowan then blasted a three run home run to cut the deficit to 5-4 in the top of the fifth inning. DeSales put the game out of reach with six runs in the bottom of the sixth.
"We gave DeSales too many chances in the first game," explained head coach Brittany Stroop. "Its hard to win a game when you give a good team extra chances to succeed. Janelle (Fair) pitched a much better game than the scoreboard showed."
The Eagles started game two as the aggressor with three runs in the top of the first inning. Esposito and Michele Morongell singled and McGowan walked. Fair then ripped a single to left field. An outfield miscue allowed Morongell and McGowan to score.
DeSales scored in the bottom of the third, but the Eagles tacked on single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
The Bulldogs put their first two runners on in the seventh, but Kristine Rosko worked herself out of the jam to complete the game. The Edison, N.J. native scattered six hits, allowed only the one earned run, and struck out four batters.
Jaclyn Gangemi paced the offense in game two. The sophomore second baseman went 3 for 4 with a run scored and an RBI. Fair and Morongell collected two hits each.
"Kristine pitched extremely well for us in the second game," praised Stroop. "She has consistently stepped up for us. She did exactly what she needed to do to win, which was keep a very good hitting team off balance. It was also nice that we were able to hit and give her the run support she needed in order to really attack their lineup with her best stuff."
With the split, the Eagles (9-16, 2-6) keep their play off hopes alive. They stay on the road for a non-conference doubleheader at Philadelphia Biblical University on Tuesday at 3:00 PM. The Eagles then return home on Thursday to host defending NCAA Division III National Champion Messiah College at 3:00 PM.
