Eastern University Women's Lacrosse scored twelve times in the
opening forty minutes of their home game against Rowan University. The
Eagles, however, were not able to find the net over the final 20 minutes
of play and the visiting Profs scored three times to earn a 13-12
non-conference win.
The game, which
was rescheduled from yesterday, started beautifully for the Eagles.
Grace Griffith scored a pair
of goals in the first two minutes, and the Eagles would not trail until
nine minutes remained in the game. Griffith, who finished with five tallies, scored her first
on a smart feed from Krystal Cairn. The standout junior added her second
on a free-position shot 45 seconds later.
Though the visitors tied the game on a pair of Alayna Morris goals, the Eagles
quickly regained control as Jess Field and Kendall Rood each tallied for
a 4-2 edge. The Eagles held an 8-6 edge at half, and had a 19-11
advantage in shots. Kerry Pehnke
turned away seven Eastern shots in the first half hour to keep the
visitors in the game.
The
second half started with the
Eagles again applying pressure. Rood scored her second of the day on a
nice roll from behind the crease to give the home team a 9-6 edge. Rowan
answered with goals from
Alli Dickey and Nicole Valianti
to pull within a goal with
25:41 to play.
Eastern pushed
the edge back to two goals just seconds later as Kelly Dando buried her 14th of the year on a feed from
Field. Morris, who finished with
five goals for the guests, then imposed her will on the game with two goals in a 10 second span.
The first came on a free position shot, and the second came in
transition off the ensuing draw.
The Eagles, however, rallied with two nice goals. Allie Fultz buried her second of the day
on a sharp pass from Cairns, and Griffith made the Eastern lead 12-10 with 20:36 on the clock.
The Eagles had chances to increase their
advantage, but the Rowan defense stood strong, and they were able to
halve the lead on a transition goal from Dickey with 12:20 to play. Two minutes
later, Dickey tied the game on a drive through several defenders, and
one minute later she scored her fourth
of the day to give the guests their first lead.
Rowan was
able to manage the clock and force enough turnovers to make their only
lead last.
The Eagles (2-5, 2-2 MAC) return to league action
tomorrow with a trip to Wilkes University.
