Eastern University Women's Lacrosse
jumped out to a four goal lead in the first half of their home opener,
but Haverford (5-0) scored twice in the final minute of the first half
and two more in the opening minutes of the second half before pulling
away to an 11-7 win. Grace Griffith
scored four goals to pace the Eagles.
Griffith
opened the scoring in the third minute with her first tally of the year.
The junior attack buried her free position attempt for the 107th tally of her career. Sophomore
Kelly Dando doubled the
Eastern edge four minutes later on a nice individual effort. Seconds
later, Courtney Reinhold took advantage of a Haverford turnover and
drove to goal. The sophomore earned the Eagles' second free position
attempt of the day and buried the low shot for her first of the season.
Throughout the first half, Haverford controlled
the draws, but the Eastern defense and the brutal weather conditions
combined to create turnovers, and the Eastern attackers were able to get
opportunities. The Eagles made it 4-0 with 18 minutes to play on
Griffith's second of the day on a nice feed from behind the cage by
Krystal Cairns.
The game
stalled for a bit as both
teams struggled to build scoring chances with the sideways rain and slippery
conditions. Haverford finally got on the board with 6:46 to play in the first half
on an Alexa Pesce finish
from in close. Griffith,
however, answered with
another finish of a Cairns pass to restore the Eastern edge to 5-1 with just under four to play.
The
Fords closed out the half with a pair of goals on broken plays. Alexis
Bond scored the second of those on a loose ball with 14 seconds to play.
Eastern held a 9-8 edge in first half shots, but Haverford carried most of the momentum of the game at intermission.
The Fords scored twice early in the second before
Griffith answered on a
strong dodge from the left side to put the Eagles up 6-5. Haverford,
however, began to take command of the game with draw control wins and good
possession in the attacking arc. They reeled off six straight tallies
before The Eagles finally answered with Kendall Rood's first of the
year with just under nine to
play.
Siobahn Neitzel played the final 41
minutes of the game in goal for Haverford and made one save to earn the
win.The Eagles return to action Tuesday night at The College of New
Jersey.
