Of all the road trips in the Freedom Conference, the journey up to Purchase is probably the most demanding. Eastern University Field Hockey survived that journey with an efficient 3-1 win over Manhattanville on Saturday. Kim Campbell paced the Eagles with a pair of goals.
Eastern held a 12-1 advantage in shots at the half, but they were unable to convert any of their shots or seven penalty corners into an advantage on the scoreboard. With the match level at the break, the 9th ranked Eagles needed to refocus for the second half.Â
The Eastern squad responded to Coach Azzarano's halftime exhortations with a three goal burst to put the game away. Campbell picked up the first goal less than three minutes into the second on a penalty corner goal. The senior forward redirected a Yvonne Herbster shot for her fifth goal of the season.
Brittany Moyer doubled the Eastern advantage 100 seconds later. Herbster again created the chance with a good cross to Moyer on the back post. Another 100 seconds had ticked off the clock when Campbell made the score 3-0. Moyer set up the final goal with a cross to Campbell on the back post.
The Valiants called a timeout and were able to stem the tide, but the damage had been done. Jen Ascencio scored at the hour mark to cut the deficit, but Laura Ressler and the Eastern defense would not allow Manhattanville to close the gap further.
Eastern (10-1, 2-0 Freedom) has now won nine straight contests. The Eagles will attempt to keep the streak alive as they return home for a trio of games this coming week. They host Gwynedd-Mercy College and Haverford College in non-league games on Tuesday and Thursday before returning to Freedom Conference play against DeSales on Saturday.
