Eastern University Women's Soccer used four second half goals to break open the game en route to a 5-0 home win over Delaware Valley College. Kelsey Doutrich scored a pair of goals to lead the Eagles.
The Eagles, playing with their tenth different starting line-up of the year, jumped into the driver's seat of the game almost immediately with pressure on the Delaware Valley goal. Tess Beckwith served several dangerous balls in the scoring area, and the Eagles had three corner kicks in the first seven minutes. Unlike Saturday's game at DeSales, Eastern was unable to fit a ball in between the goalposts early.
Doutrich broke the tie in the 17th minute with a short finish on a rebound of Alli Inch's breakaway attempt. Inch had found space on the left side after a good entry pass from her sister Carly.
The Eagles continued to control play throughout the first half, but they were unable to separate from the organized Aggie defense. It looked as though the home side had doubled the edge in the final seconds, but Beckwith's shot crossed the goal line after the horn sounded. At the break, Eastern held an 11-2 edge in shots and a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks, but the result remained in the balance with a 1-0 score.
After the break, the Eagles continued to possess the ball, but shot after shot went without a result. Beckwith hit the crossbar with a shot, and had another pair of attempts turned away by the Del Val goalkeeper.Â
The Aggies had a chance to tie in the 52nd minute, but Aly Goodman was in position to corral the soft shot. Goodman, secured the shutout in her first action in over three weeks.
Doutrich broke through in the 67th minute off a beautifully textured ball from Carly Inch. She lifted a one-time shot over the onrushing goalkeeper for her 12th of the year. With the larger lead, the Eagles continued to control the tempo of the game. Kristine Zeiset picked up the third goal of the match on a penalty kick in the 72nd minute. Amy Thomas drew the penalty with a run into the box.
In the 76th minute, Thomas then extended her scoring streak to three games with a left-footed rocket from the top of the box. Alli Inch provided the assist on the goal. Michelle Brown closed out the scoring with a strong run into the box and a deft finish.
"We struggled a little to have a purpose in our possession early," Eastern head coach Dan Mouw remarked, "They did a very good job of staying organized behind the ball, and after we didn't finish on Tess's crosses early, we let them stay in front of us. Our team did much better getting into space behind them in the second half."
The Eagles will have until Saturday to get more players healthy for a home Freedom Contest against King's.
