Eastern University Women's Soccer celebrated senior day with a convincing 4-0 home win over King's College. Kelsey Doutrich scored three goals in the win.
Eastern (12-3-1, 6-0 Freedom) spent time prior to the match recognizing the contributions of Amy Achey. As the only senior on Eastern's squad, Achey has provided considerable leadership and maturity as the team has transitioned over her four years. Achey has played in the NCAA Tournament in each of her years, and she earned 1st Team All-Conference honors as a junior.Â
The senior center back then helped the Eastern defense to hold King's without a shot for the next 90 minutes.Â
Though the Monarchs were unable to generate offensive momentum, they were able to frustrate the Eastern attack for much of the first half. In spite of the visitor's efforts to stay organized behind the ball, the Eagles were able to create some early chances. Michelle Brown hit 25 yard strike off the inside of the back post that left the woodwork ringing, but the Eagles were unable to capitalize on the rebound.
Doutrich found the net for the first time in the 19th minute on a smart through ball from Carly Inch. Inch's pass slipped between the two King's central defenders and Doutrich, as has been her pattern of late, made the most of the chance with a solid shot to the lower corner. Though the chances came more steadily for the Eagles after the opening goal, the Monarchs kept the score at one until 44th minute. Julie Salerno had perhaps the closest of those chances when she hit the upper corner of the goal on a shot from a wide position.
Kristine Zeiset doubled the Eastern lead with a smashing volley into the top of the net on a corner kick. Eastern took twelve first-half shots but was only able to put four on frame for the 2-0 lead.
The Eagles brought a greater sense of urgency to the second half, and that mentality shift resulted in an early goal from Doutrich. Brown started the play with a strong run in the midfield and a well-weighted pass into Doutrich's feet. The sophomore forward made a quick turn and beat a pair of defenders before ripping a shot past the King's goalie. Doutrich completed the hat trick in the 63rd minute with a clean finish of an Amy Thomas cross from a tight angle.
The win keeps the Eagles at the top of the Freedom Conference standings, but they have yet to lock up the top seed. FDU-Florham won at Misericordia this afternoon and is two points back with a head-to-head match-up next Saturday night in Madison, New Jersey.
