Eastern went up a goal early, but the host Griffins played with great tenacity and enthusiasm to earn a 3-2 overtime win.
Yvonne Herbster opened the scoring midway through the first half with a high shot from right near the stroke line. The Eagles had much of the play, but the Griffins took advantage of several consecutive restart opportunities and quickly tied the game on a hard shot to the upper corner from the right hand side from Casey Dellostretto.Â
The Eagles continued to carry the play, but the Griffins seemed to earn penalty corners every time they found their way into the circle, but the hosts scored the go-ahead goal in transition. Dottie O'Neal tapped in a thigh-high cross to give Gwynedd their first lead in their new facility.
Down 2-1 at the break, the Eagles needed to respond with a more assertive second half, and they found their way into the Griffin circle almost immediately. After several shots and corners, and having a goal called back, Eastern finally drew level midway through the period when Kim Campbell redirected a Herbster drive into the center of an open cage.
At that moment, it seemed that the game would turn for the guests. The Griffins however held off multiple corners and several close calls to force extra time. Each team had chances early in the overtime, but both goalies came up with big saves in one on one situations. Gwynedd took advantage of a one-player advantage to put additional pressure on the Eastern cage as the first overtime period wound down. Kayla Farrow ripped home a hard shot from the left side to lift the Griffins to the upset win.
Coach Azzarano was not pleased with her team's execution in the final portion of the field, but gave credit to the Griffins. "Our corners were not good, and we did not shoot well, but Gwynedd played very hard and put together a great game."
The Eagles return to action at Franklin and Marshall College on Saturday.
