The host Devils scored five straight goals around the half-time break to seize control of the game and emerge with the 16-11 win.
Eastern, the 2008 PAC Champions, jumped to a 2-0 advantage on goals from Katie Choquette and Kristin Brownett,
but the Eagles were unable to pull away. Erin Fries gave Eastern their
final lead of the day when she converted a free position shot to put
the Eagles up 5-4 with just under ten minutes to play in the first half.
The Devils began their
decisive run on a free position shot from Lindsey Parent. By the end of
the contest, FDU converted six of their fifteen free position attempts
into goals. Fries' free position goal was the Eagles' only eight meter
goal of the evening. FDU scored twice more before the half for a 7-5
lead going to the break. FDU held a 28-13 advantage in shots in the
opening half, and they forced Kim Campbell to make ten of her 16 saves
before te break.
FDU
scored twice in the opening minutes of the second half before Fries
connected on her second of the day to stem the tide. The Devils
stretched their lead to 14-7 with another quick burst of goals. The
Eagles responded with four straight tallies to cut the FDU advantage
to 14-11before the hosts converted another pair of free position goals for the final margin.
Fries finished the day with four goals, and Choquette and Basch each finished with two goals and an assist. Brownett scored a pair of goals. Eastern Head Coach Camrin Azzarano
was pleased with some aspects of her team's play against the defending
MAC Champions. She said, "we struggled to get into the offense a bit,
but when we were able to get our offense going, we created good chances
and scored some very nice goals. We need to adjust a little better to
the way things are being called in the arc, but I think we can build
off this."
The Eagles (2-3 1-2) have played each of last year's finalists on the road to start the year, and will return home to take on Misericordia this Saturday at noon.
