University women's lacrosse team emerged with a 22-11 win over
conference rival Misericordia.
Jessie Basch set the pace with five
goals and seven assists and
Katie Choquette scored five and set up two.
Misericordia
controlled the opening draw and Nicole DeAngelis scored her first of
the day just 18 seconds into the match. The Eagles won the second draw
and Basch answered with her first of the day just 33 seconds later. The
Eastern senior then controlled her own draw and raced to goal for her
second of the day just 10 seconds later to put Eastern up 2-1 just 61
seconds into the match. Misericordia's Shannon Tinkham scored her first
of the game and 30th of the year on a nice pass from Jamie Wargo to tie
the score at two with 28:24 on the clock. Choquette found Erin Fries in
front of the net to give the Eagles the 3-2 lead 18 seconds later, but
that lead was short-lived as the Cougars tied the game with 27:04 on
the clock on an unassisted goal from Nicole DeAngelis.
DeAngelis
gave the Cougars their second and final lead of the contest with a free
position goal four minutes later. Grace Griffith answered the DeAngelis
goal with her first of four on the afternoon on a free position shot.
Basch gave the Eagles the lead for good with her third of the day at
the 19:28 mark. Basch then set up Choquette to give the Eagles a two
goal edge before Tinkham closed the gap back to 6-5 with her second of
the day.
The Eagles pulled away to an 11-6 lead as Choquette
scored three times and Griffith and Basch added single tallies, but
Tinkham put away her third of the day to steal back a little momentum
for the visitors going to the break.
The Eagles held a 24-15 edge in
shots through the first thirty minutes. The Cougars held an 11-8 edge
in draw controls, but Eastern forced their guests into 14 turnovers and
took advantage of those chances for the 11-7 lead at the break.
DeAngelis
opened the second half with her fourth of the day to cut into the
Eastern lead. The Eagles, however, answered with a four goal burst in
just over a minute and a half to seize control of the game. Erin Reimel
scored a pair of goals in the run as the Eagles won three straight
draws and scored off a quick turnover on the fourth draw. Fries and
Choquette scored the other two goals on passes from Basch.
Griffith
scored the next two goals as the Eastern defense locked down the
Misericordia attackers and took a 17-8 lead. Basch then put the Eagles
up 18-8 as she wrapped a shot behind her back after winning the self
draw. The Eagles held the lead and finished the game with goals from
Anne Dietrich, Reimel's third of the day, and a pair from Allie Fultz.
Tinkham
and DeAngelis each finished with five goals for the Cougars. Griffth
scored four goals and Fries had two goals and an assist. Kim Campbell
made ten saves before giving way to Kristy Getsay in the waning moments
of the game.
The Eagles host Rowan University on Tuesday
afternoon before returning to conference action with a home game
against Manhattanville College on Wednesday.
