The 23rd ranked Eastern University volleyball team improved to 28-4 on the season with a pair of quality wins at the Seahawk Invitational at St. Mary's College in Maryland. The Eagles beat the hosts in five sets and Washington and Lee in three. With 39 kills on the day, Courtney Reinhold became just the third Eastern player to eclipse 500 kills in a season.
The Eagles dropped the opening set against St. Mary's, but rallied to take the next two, 26-24 and 25-16. The host Seahawks took the fourth set 25-20 before the Eagles closed out the match with a 15-8 final set victory. Reinhold led the way with 29 kills. Maria Horning finished with 52 assists and a pair of aces. Easten Head Coach Mark Birtwistle cited the consistent defense of Kelly Groff with 28 digs.
The Eagles found a more balanced attack in the second match. Birtwistle was very pleased with his team's performance against a tough Washington and Lee team. He said, "They had two very good middles, but we served well enough to keep them out of system and our defense was really solid." The head coach also pointed out the strong net play of first-year players Rachel Wenger and Heather Kauffman as keys to the victory. Wenger and Kauffman combined for 17 kills and 4 blocks on the match.
The Eagles return home for the Freedom Conference Semifinal against Wilkes on Wednesday night at 7pm.
