The Eastern University volleyball team advanced to the Freedom Conference Championship with an efficient 3-0 home win over 4th seeded Wilkes. The Eagles finished the match with 17 aces and put the visiting Colonels under heavy pressure throughout the evening with powerful serves to difficult spots. Sophomore outside hitter Nikki Kummerer led the way with six aces.
The 23rd ranked Eagles never got into a great offensive rhythm on the evening, but they were solid enough in serve receive to regain serve throughout the opening set. The Eastern team has paid particular attention to serving aggressively throughout the year, and they put away six aces and kept the Colonels out of system throughout the opening game on the way to a 25-9 first set win. Courtney Reinhold was the primary hitter for the Eagles in the opening set. The sophomore All-American only played two sets and finished with seven kills, four aces, and a pair of blocks.
Reinhold's serving set the tone for the second set. She delivered three consecutive aces as the Eagles built a quick 12-4 lead and never looked back.Eastern hit just .150 for the set, but limited Wilkes to just 15 attacks and a negative hitting percentage on the way to a 25-10 second set win. Eastern continued to press through the third set, and though Wilkes returned more serves, they were still unable to get into system as the Eagles rallied from an early 3-0 deficits with 7 straight points on Mary Poole's serve.
Maria Horning delivered 24 assists as the Eagles hit .250 for the match on just 64 attacks. Rachel Wenger and Heather Kauffman each had five kills. Senior Bridget Carey put down four kills in her return to the line-up. The Eastern team recognized Carey and fellow senior Stephanie Weaver prior to the match. Weaver finished with a pair of digs and an ace.
The Eagles will face DeSales, a 3-1 winner over FDU-Florham in the other Semifinal, in Saturday's Championship. The Freedom Conference Champion earns the league's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
